These sketches and the final presentation were created for a Basics of Interior Space Design course, completed in December 2022, through The New School, Parsons School of Design. Drawing with charcoal pencils and drafting tools took me way back to high school drafting class! Eternal thanks to my teacher back then, Don Keil, for the amazing mentorship and instruction. These aren’t perfect but a fun exercise for sure!
Given an apartment boundary of ~965 sqft—with a fixed outer wall, windows, and plumbing wall—create a Garden Apartment for a fictional client based on one of four basic personas. The assignment allowed for a 10 ft. by (up to) full width patio to be added.
Explore all programming and design development stages to create a functional and beautiful space based on client needs. Submit all work for feedback from other designers. Adjust as needed.
My chosen client was a small family moving from America to Australia. They have two small children, so the brief called for a two-bedroom solution, with Living, Kitchen, Dining, and a single bathroom. The couple is mixed, with both Japanese and European heritage and wanted the space to reflect a blend of the two, incorporating traditional Japanese joinery and wabi-sabi elements with mid-century modern details. They also preferred a natural material aesthetic and simple color palette. I was able to create a functional and efficient two-bedroom solution that incorporated all their particular needs. I incorporated the 10x35 patio and divided it into two spaces—a public social space and a covered private workshop/garden.
